Handmade Leather clutch (No Sew)

29 May

Today I have a very interesting DIY for you, a small leather clutch that you can make without sewing. Honestly this is really easy to make. I had a small spare piece of vegetable tan leather so I thought of making use of that but you may use any leather piece or you can even use rexine, just make sure the material you use is no too thin because it won’t look neat and presentable.

You’ll need:
  • Vegetable tan leather
  • Leather cord (you may cut thin strips)
  • Rubber based adhesive or Fevibond
  • Punching machine
  • Cutter/ Scissors
  • Scale
  • Ivory sheet (A3)
Procedure:
  • First step is making the pattern on ivory sheet so you can trace it on leather without mistake.(You may make it without cutting the paper pattern if you like; this is option for the beginners.)
The total length is 34cm (divided into 9.5cm, 12.5cm & 12cm) and width 18cm. For the rectangular piece the width is 22cm and length 1cm. (I took the length 1.5cm but realized it would have been easier with 1cm) and later it’ll be placed as shown in the image below.

  • Trace the pattern on leather and cut it.

  • Now fold it as shown in the pattern in first image and hammer it, which would look something like this.

  • Next step is to punch circles on the sides, if you have punching tools use them or you may use punching machine like I did.  Put the folded sides together as shown in the image below.

If the leather is too thick then skive it by using a razor or cutter.
(Don’t use the cutter if you’re doing this for first time)
  • Cut the sides of the flap (width: 2cm) as shown in the image below.
  • For the closure, mark 2cm on each side of the rectangular part, fold it and hammer it carefully.
  • Now punch the folded part as shown in the image below.

  •  Cut two brown strips (20cm) with pointed ends so that you are easily able to insert it in the circles.
  • From the back side insert the pointed end of strip and roll it around to insert it in the second circle, do it till you reach the 5th hole.

  • Time to attach the closure,
Insert the folded part of rectangular piece between the upper and lower part as shown in the image below and continue the roll and insert technique till you reach the end .
  • Now if there is extra part of strip left insert it as shown in the 3rd image. Flip to the backside and paste the hanging extra part like shown in the last image.

  • Repeat the steps for the other side and once you complete it should look something like this.

  • This step is optional but I feel it looks very plain and boring so I’m going to add a bow in the middle of the rectangular part and strips to the flap.
  • Cut brown strips to cover the side parts of the flap and paste as shown in the image below.

  • Now for the bow; Cut a small strip around 5cm
  • Cut a small circular leather piece and pinching the middle part make frills and paste the strip around the middle part.
(I’m so sorry I forgot to click photos while making the bow.)

  • Attach the bow to the closure,
Punch a hole in the middle of the rectangular and insert the extra part of strip that was left in bow as shown in the image below. Now paste the strip behind the rectangular part and trip the extra part.

TIP: Apply vaseline for shine.

And you have a beautiful clutch ready to flaunt wherever you go!
